The History of Mothers Day

Mother’s Day was originally a group that was made up of widowed women.  The second Sunday of each month they met together and had a group meeting.  They talked about how they loved their husband and how much they miss him.  They would also help encourage each other through their struggles.  They would come up with idea’s to help them get rid of the idea that their husband was dead.

In 1904, one of the mothers started talking about how they never talk about their children and how much their children help them so much.  Then, she decided to bring her three children to the group meeting.  When she did, they helped clean and they cooked meals to share with everyone.  Then another widowed parent brought her 6 children.  Then the rest of the widowed parents brought their children.  There was not enough room for everyone or for all of the food, so the took turns bringing their children and cooking meals for everyone.

In 1924, the second Sunday of each month became, Widowed Mother’s Day.  Then when everyone started getting over the lost of their husbands, they started coming once a year.  They met on the second Sunday of may.  Most of those parents got married, so they were not widows anymore.  So they decided to call the second Sunday of May, Mother’s Day, instead of Widowed Mother’s Day.
